OVERVIEW
RESOURCE DESCRIPTION
The Program for Monitoring Emerging Diseases (ProMED)-mail system provides early warning of potential biological outbreaks worldwide, using public, non-sensitive information from online sources and submissions from local observers. Outbreak reports are distributed by email to direct subscribers and posted immediately on the ProMED website. Sources of information include media reports, official reports, public data from ministries of health, online summaries, local observers, and others. A team of expert human, plant, and animal disease moderators screen, review, and investigate reports before posting to the network. ProMED-mail data are automatically scraped by some biosurveillance programs to determine when public health events may be occurring based on the type of report and its geographic origin.
