OVERVIEW
RESOURCE DESCRIPTION
HealthMap monitors global disease outbreaks based on real-time surveillance of a variety of public domestic and international news, medical, and social media sources. Outbreak reports and their media sources are mapped and can be viewed by symptom (e.g., respiratory) or specific disease (e.g., flu). Trend graphs showing the number of outbreak reports over time in a specific area can be created automatically. For high-profile outbreak events, special content may be published specific to that event, including predicted disease spread, if available. Additionally, interactive flu trend and forecast graphs are available for the entire US, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) regions, and US states. Users may submit outbreak reports of their own; all submissions are vetted by the HealthMap staff. Customized alerts and summary reports can be generated. A mobile application is also available ("Outbreaks Near Me"). HealthMap processes about 3,000 alerts in 40,000 locations from 200,000+ sources daily. Frequently used data feeds include Twitter, Google News, ProMED-mail, World Health Organization notifications, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Emerging Infectious Disease Journal. Other data feeds include the Pacific Disaster Center (PDC), Wildlife Data Integration Network, the World Organisation for Animal Health, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, GeoSentinel, EuroSurveillance, Moreover, Baidu News (China), and SOSO Info (China).
