OVERVIEW

RESOURCE DESCRIPTION

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) GeoPlatform is an internet-based situational awareness viewer designed to provide access to all publicly accessible government geospatial data relevant to emergency management. FEMA GeoPlatform includes access to over 10,000 data layers (some requiring a FEMA login and password), including both event-specific data as well as static and historical datasets. Presidential Disaster Declarations, which define the geographic boundaries of areas impacted by an event and therefore eligible for aid, are one of the many layers. The GeoPlatform places all relevant information in a single location, allowing users to select only the information needed for their specific missions. As FEMA GeoPlatform is accessible to the public, no sensitive or proprietary information can be included. Examples of available datasets include event-specific economic impact estimates, post-event assessment data, modeled surge maps, hospital and other critical infrastructure locations, and live traffic estimates. All available aerial imagery from civil air patrol and other private sources, such as ImageCat, is collated and posted on the viewer. FEMA is now developing an analysis team to build event-specific maps with real-time data for FEMA GeoPlatform. The Community Analyst tool can be accessed through FEMA GeoPlatform to create reports of detailed US Census population and demographics data for user-defined areas of interest. Additionally, imagery tagged with damage assessment categories using the open source MapMill application may be stored in the GeoPlatform, and most recently was used for Hurricane Sandy post-event aerial imagery.
