OVERVIEW

RESOURCE DESCRIPTION

DisasterAssistance.gov provides disaster survivors with information, support, services, and a means to access and apply for disaster assistance through the Disaster Assistance Improvement Program (DAIP). Federal agencies use the data to track the portion of the population seeking and acquiring assistance. During an event, FEMA uses DisasterAssistance.gov as one method to determine the number of impacted people who are seeking federal disaster assistance. This information helps FEMA determine the initial scope of recovery assistance that will be needed for a specific event. They also use the website to determine what sources of assistance may be available to people impacted by a disaster. Users can search for sources of disaster assistance that apply to their specific circumstances by answering a short list of questions about how a disaster has impacted them. DisasterAssistance.gov then returns a list of potential assistance sources with instructions describing how to apply for each. Additionally, during an event, DisasterAssistance.gov allows users to enter their ZIP codes to determine whether their areas have been declared eligible for FEMA Individual Assistance (IA). Users can then locate the nearest Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) and Red Cross shelters, where they can go to receive immediate help with assistance registration and mass care needs.
